New Music Monday: May 3

Quite a few quality releases this week. The obvious standout of the week is Hold Steady’s new record “Heaven is Whenever”, which aside from our obvious affection for the band is well on par with their previous material, making it a definite recommend! “Forgiveness Rock Record”, Broken Social Scene’s first record in five years, is also out this week. I’ve been sampling FRR for a few weeks now, since it leaked on the web, and…

Bettye LaVette “Is” The Rolling Stones

I like to think that I keep my finger on the pulse. I sniff out news, I hunt down obscure albums to review, and I rend asunder songs and feast on their bulbous, nutritious entrails. Also, I mix my metaphors, and I get confused about time zones and stuff, and sometimes I sleep until 4pm in the afternoon. All of that somehow adds up to the reason that I bring this to you today, only…

Here There Be Nudedragons

Or, as they’re perhaps more commonly known, Soundgarden. Y’know: Soundgarden. The most interesting band of the big Seattle four, who recently played a reunion show at the famous Showbox Theatre. That Soundgarden. And now there is a pro-shot video of their performance of Beyond The Wheel from that gig, which – quite honestly – defies all logical expectations, and both illogical ones. It’s gooooooooooood. That’s after the jump.

Hear anything by Black Francis for free – legally

The legendary Pixies frontman has put his entire solo catalog on his site for free. As he proudly proclaims on the site, The site here has been re-vamped a bit.  I am most excited about our new player.  It has all of the solo releases at the moment.  You can play and listen at your leisure.  We are hoping to load other releases (Pixies, b-side compilations, etc.) in the future. Which, I must say, is…

New M.I.A. video: ‘Born Free’ (M.I.A.)

Violent, aggressive, and disturbing is nothing but M.I.A.’s latest video for her latest single “Born Free”, which just recently leaked on the web. It’s better to leave this short for words, so I’ll leave you to Romain Gavras’s directed video below. Free the ginger kids! M.I.A.’s still untitled third album will be allegedly out June 29th.

New Grizzly Bear song featured on lottery ad

Seems like the Washington state lottery is trying to tap into the indie kids market with this latest commercial, soundtracked by a new, unreleased Grizzly Bear track. Although only 60 seconds long, the music as expected is simply outworldly – coupled with the marvelous choreography staged by Michael Rooney, the man behind (500) Days of Summer‘s beloved Hall & Oates dance sequence, and the dreamy visuals by Patrick Daughters, who previously helmed Grizzly Bear’s “Two…

Listen to the National’s “High Violet” right now

Another week sees another new album streaming before its release date.  This time around, the band in question is the beloved Brooklyn indie collective The National and the band’s newest effort, High Violet. The New York Times website is hosting the stream and offers a fascinating bio of the band as well. It’s as stirring as 2007’s Boxer. My initial reaction is that this may well be the band’s defining record. It’s that good. If…
