The Literary Greats: “Ocean, Meet The Valley”

Album name: Ocean, Meet The Valley Artist name: The Literary Greats Genre: Country Rock Released: October 2009 Label: ERROR ERROR ERROR ZME Rating: 7/10 Website: theliterarygreats.com An intro: My inbox appears to have become some sort of primitive, text-based time machine. No less than two – TWO – separate e-mails have arrived recently, directing my bespectacled eyes towards albums that were released in the latter half of last year. Naturally, my hip-to-the-jive neophile tendencies led…

New Deftones video: ‘Diamond Eyes’

I’ve been waiting for Deftones’ new album to come out for ages, and in less than a few weeks, the band’s sixth studio release dubbed “Diamond Eyes” will be upon us. Below you can check out the video for the blood pumping Diamond Eyes, the record’s second single and title track. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews for Diamond Eyes, some hailing it as the band’s best effort since their self titled, while others…

“I’d Like to Know”: A User’s Guide to Getting into the ‘Grass

For those of you who missed the story on Pitchfork yesterday because it was buried underneath a bunch of non-stories about bands like the Neckbeards, the Dirty Projectors, and Swamp Guzzle (I know only one of those bands is real), (very) British rockers Supergrass announced that they’re ending things after seventeen years. Considering how we’re more than a decade removed from John & Kate Averageamerican caring about ‘Britpop’ as it was, it’s not a huge…

Department of Eagles ‘Archive 2003-2006’

I simply loved the 2008 “In Ear Park” by the smashing indie duo Department of Eagles, individually formed by Grizzly Bear’s Daniel Rossen and Fred Nicolaus. At times the album feels likes a religious experience, one where the surreal meets life and blends into one unique crossroad. The whole thing was extremely polished, from composition, to arrangements, to production – a perfectionist’s soundtrack, if you will. As such, a lot of tracks have been scrapped….

New Music Monday: April 12

I love pure instrumental music, and Atlantian Kaki King is one of my favorite artists to sprang off the new wave. Her signature picking style has branched out along the year into something really special. It’s like she’s managed to dwell to such a depth in her music, that’s she almost into a whole new acoustic genre – a mark that only few artists manage to make. Anyway, Kaki’s fifth studio effort, “Junior” is out…

Coheed and Cambria’s new record available for streaming

The prog band currently has its newest effort, Year of the Black Rainbow, up on its MySpace page to enjoy. It’s due out tomorrow so if you like it, go get it. I’ve never tried to understand the storyline that has gone since The Second Stage Turbine Blade. I just really think that C&C know how to write a fucking great hook and rock the hell out. If you are able to follow the story,…

earlove

I used Earlove, the hi-fi earplugs to the Camera Obscura/Princeton Show @ Lincoln Hall on April 5th and my ears were definitely happy after the show. I was able to enjoy the music without the headache. These ear plugs are super comfortable, easy to use and aesthetically pleasing. ”Earlove ear plugs were designed to reduce overall sound level while preserving sound quality (i.e. no distortion or muffling of voices, environmental sounds, or music). Earlove uses the same…

Indie rock from Japan with love: Shugo Tokumaru

A folksy sound, classic guitar strings, catchy hooks and a feel good vibe that could turn even the most depressed individual into an incurable optimist – this is Shugo Tokumaru’s music. The talented Japanese singer/songwriter so far has three albums under his belt – “Night Piece” (2004),” L.S.T” (2005) and Exit (2007) with a fourth one slated for a Japan release on April 21st, called “Port Entropy.” I first came into contact with his jovial…
