New Music Monday: April 12

I love pure instrumental music, and Atlantian Kaki King is one of my favorite artists to sprang off the new wave. Her signature picking style has branched out along the year into something really special. It’s like she’s managed to dwell to such a depth in her music, that’s she almost into a whole new acoustic genre – a mark that only few artists manage to make. Anyway, Kaki’s fifth studio effort, “Junior” is out this week and, if you’re familiar with her traditional sound, you’ll be more than pleasantly surprised with this one. The girl is just rocking it!

The highly anticipated “Congratulations“, MGMT‘s sophomore full length effort, is the highlight of the week’s slew of new albums coming out. It’s an album less infused with “Kids”-esque pop singles featured on the Oracle Spectacular debut, being a lot more centered around sprawling, psychedelic sounds.

One of the most influential lead guitarists of the past century, Jeff Beck, is releasing his new album “Emotion and Commotion“. Beck never really shared the same level of success his past collaborators, like former Yardbirds band mates Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, but I’ve always found his instrumental releases innovative and forward thinking, to say the least.

Year of the Black Rainbow“, the latest Coheed and Cambria concept album, prequel to The Amory Wars storyline, is also out this week. So far, judging the relatively scarce spin I gave it, the record sounds great. YotBR is streaming in it’s entirety on the band’s myspace – go, go, go!
