Listen to Sufjan Stevens, Cat Power, Jim James & Calexico: Bob Dylan covers

If you’ve been living in a cave or something like that, then you should know that a [tag]Bob Dylan[/tag] biopic titled I’m Not There is set to run on the big screens next month. You can’t really make a movie about Bob Dylan without a proper soundtrack and the current excellent cover songs performed by various artists ranging from indie to pop to rave do well in paying tribute to the legendary artist.

Sony is currently streaming three songs from the 2-disc sountrack album, 34 tracks in total, that is due October 30 including Sufjan Stevens‘ take on “Ring Them Bells,” Cat Power‘s cover “Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again” and Jim James of My Morning Jacket with Calexico‘s rendition of “Goin’ To Acapulco.” All three songs are great versions of the iconic originals that do well in capturing Bob Dylan’s passionate vocals. Oh except for Sufjan’s try though; it’s not that it’s terrible or anything, but when covering a artist as iconic as Dylan there’s no room for mediocrity. I don’t know if his attempt to make “Ring Them Bells” sound more unique or his unmatching vocals were the one that caused the cover to fail, but ones thing certain: he tried to hard.

Jim James and Calexico’s cover of “Goin’ To Acapulco,” however, is sublime! Jim’s voice is exceptional and suits the sadder theme of the song perfectly; the duet chorus with Calexico is breathtaking. By the looks of it, the double CD soundtrack is shaping out really nicely and I’m more then certain it’ll spin for a long long long time in my cd player. “I’m Not There” the movie debuts on the big screens on November 21.
