While pondering the best albums of the decade for ZME, it occurred to me that I should also consider discussing the decade’s best songs. I’ve certainly been making a list of the best of the 2000’s in my head for some time now, and I finally have an outlet for those thoughts. That said, I’m not going to bother with an actual ranking of these songs in the coming weeks for three reasons. Primarily, I’m…
Download: The Whigs – ‘In The Dark’
The Whigs are a band that has slowly, but surely, risen among the ranks in the indie/alt rock scene in the last few years. What’s very important to note is that the band’s initial spark of success came based solely on a self-released effort, their 2005 debut “Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip”, which eventually was re-released by ATO Records after they signed the group. The sophomore “Mission Control” washed up a few years…
Hot streaming: Phoenix’s Wolfgang Amadeus The Remix Collection
Forget what Chinese astrology might tell you, 2009 is the year of the Phoenix! After delivering what can only be described as almost pure pop perfection, in the form of their last record “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”, and becoming the most remixed band of the summer, it’s pretty clear the band is at the top of its game. We posted a few remixes before, really great ones too, but you’ll probably find the best ones on…
Download: Fever Ray – ‘Stranger Than Kindness’ (Nick Cave cover)
During her recent summer tour, Karin Andresson released a very limited edition 7″, featuring her covering Vashti Bunyan’s “Here Before” and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’ “Stranger Than Kindness.” Both are excellent, but I found the Nick Cave one strangely interesting. The original is soberly dark, but this Fever Ray version dwells even further, exploring well beyond its limits, thus delivering an even darker, but sensual take. Her drum beats signature sound seals it…

Contest: Win Wolfmother album, poster and T-shirt
I’m sure I’ve mentioned at least a couple thousand times before how stoked I am about Wolfmother’s sophomore release. For the last week or so, Wolfmother’s new album, “Cosmic Egg”, has been streaming in its entirety down at the band’s myspace, and, so far, there hasn’t been a day in which I’m not heavily streaming at least once. It’s a really great album, although I’m not going to go as far as saying it’s better…
Download: Thao with the Get Down Stay Down – ‘Know Better Learn Faster’
It’s only been until this summer that I finally got acquainted with Thao and the Get Down Stay Down’s incredible alt rock, when, completely by chance, I stumbled across their myspace. Boy, was I missing out! There’s something really special about the band, it’s almost like they have this sort of aura around them, something that I can’t quite put my finger on – maybe it’s their catchy pop hooks or, just as well, the…
New The Decemberists: ‘The Rake’s Song’
I simply loved this stunning animated video for The Decemberists “The Rake’s Song” from the very first moment I hit play! It’s all very well put together, revealing a colorful winter landscape, packed with an usual feel good vibe and equally feel good dancing cardboard figurines. The video was was created and directed in Moscow, by Alex Dashino and Varvara Volodina, two second year students studying Moving Image at Central Saint Martins College of Art…
MGMT’s new album gets titled
The Brooklyn dance punk duo have gone a long way since their first major label debut, “Oracular Spectacular”, got out back in 2007, propulsating them to instant stardom. It’s been hectic – it can be pretty clear for anyone to notice, fact noted by the band numerous times before too. Let’s just hope that MGMT’s upcoming new album, just recently dubbed “Congratulations”, isn’t going to be affected by the incredibly massive hype their break through…
