Madonna’s “True Blue” covered by Paper Bag Artists

Mon, Apr 18, 2011

Post filled in: Download, Indie, Pop

This summer, what’s possibly Madonna‘s most influential record “True Blue” will mark 25 years since it’s epic release. As an anniversary celebration for both Madonna’s True Blue and their own 8 year anniversary as a label, Paper Bag Records will be releasing a covers tribute album. Classics like La Isla Bonita,” “Live To Tell,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” or  “Open Your Heart” have been covered and revamped by the likes of Born Ruffians, PS I Love You, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Laura Barrett and You Say Party. One of the label’s most prized jewels, Young Galaxy, offered a very slow-core, stripped down version of “Open Your Heart”, simply backed by no more than a few key strokes and a dimmed drum machine. Its through its minimalism, however, that the cover stands out.

Feel free to download the compilation for free at the Paper Bag Records website, alternatively you can stream the whole cover record on Soundcloud.

Tracklist after the jump.

01 Woodhands “Papa Don’t Preach”
02 Young Galaxy “Open Your Heart”
03 The Acorn “White Heat (Silken Laumann Remix)”
04 The Rural Alberta Advantage “Live To Tell (We’re Scared Version)”
05 PS I Love You “Where’s The Party”
06 Winter Gloves “True Blue”
07 Laura Barrett “La Isla Bonita”
08 Born Ruffians “Jimmy Jimmy”
09 You Say Party “Love Makes The World Go Round”

I don’t think studying on facebook will become rampant.  That said, I’m a teacher, and I see tons of possible uses for facebook in the classroom.  Students react to and receive media much differently today than even ten years ago.  If networking sites can be harnessed, they have a huge potential to engage students.

It really is a shame, there is so much positive that could come out of social media (just like with video games), unfortunately the negative aspects tend to take the front seat.
